I'm Diederik, a husband, father, educator, and writer currently living in Shanghai, China.One day, I wrote down a small moment: an interaction I had with my daughters and an impression I sensed from the Lord. It was a moment I could have easily forgotten. But I wrote it down and shared it with some friends.Then I kept writing.Over time, I began collecting these small moments. What If Nothing Is Ordinary? is, in many ways, the culmination of noticing, remembering, and recording them.The unexpected turns. The disappointments. The answered prayers. The seemingly insignificant details that, when viewed in hindsight, begin to tell a greater story.There are many parts of my life that feel extraordinary. I'm an American living and teaching in Shanghai, married across cultures, and raising bilingual children. But let's be honest, most of my life is quite ordinary. I drop my girls off at school, teach elementary students, and cook dinner for my family. That's a big chunk of my life right now.But somewhere along the way, I began to realize that ordinary does not mean insignificant.As I've taken time to revisit the stories of the past decade with Scripture and the Holy Spirit, I've begun to discover that God was present in ways I didn't recognize at the time. Disappointments have given way to joy. Moments I had nearly forgotten have taken on new meaning.What If Nothing Is Ordinary? was born from that process of looking back.I'm still learning to pay attention. Still writing things down. Still discovering that some of the smallest moments can tell the greatest stories.
